Automation in the casting industry — Lower cost, higher efficiency

With the increasing pressure on labour costs in China, it is important for traditional casting companies to adopt and implement automation technologies to reduce costs and improve the working environment for foundry jobs.

Working around melting furnaces and casting machines is the more labour-intensive area in a casting company.

Before introducing modern melting, automated casting arms and dosing furnaces, casting workers often had to suffer from the heat over 50 degrees under some extreme conditions during summer. The casting division has the highest employee turnover.

Automation is one of the most effective ways to reduce labour costs, improve quality control and provide a better and safer environment for the workers.

With the fences around robot arms and gravity casting machines, we are able to ensure workers stay away from the moving robot arms and steaming machines.

Automation used in our gravity casting line limits human errors and saves most of the heavy lifting during the traditional casting process.

Our HR has done many employer satisfaction reports with results indicating that few people are willing to do the heavy and stemming jobs around molten metals.

This is why the management team in Tianhe Casting Group had decided to introduce more and more advanced automation technologies to our casting division.

From the video below,  we can see there are two ways of pouring molten metal into the gravity casting machine, one is robot arm pouring, and another one is a dosing furnace.

Both of the methods reduce the inconsistency of manual labour. For example, the worker will definitely get tired after working for a while. In the beginning, the worker could be working at the pace of 5 seconds, but as time goes by, the worker gets tired. The working pace would reduce to 6-10 seconds every time.

Inside the dosing furnace, the temperature of the molten metal is kept at a constant temperature and removes the contact with the oxygen outside, minimizing the possibility of casting defects and reducing energy lost during transportation.

What’s more, the excellent software equipped with the dosing furnace allows our research team to track the data and make continuous improvements.

The best improvement of the dosing furnaces is precise control of the weight of the molten metal.

Another pouring method is an automated robot arm. The robot arm is also programmed to work at the same pace with no resting time. It has similar advantages to the dosing furnace but the robot arm scoops molten metal from an open holding furnace which sometimes leads to minor temperature losses.

At present, the manufacturing industry in China is moving from a large number of manual operations to automated and information-based intelligent manufacturing.

Metal processing machine tools have fully entered the CNC era, and information technology has been fully integrated into the traditional machine tool industry, which has greatly improved the processing accuracy, processing speed and processing flexibility of current CNC machine tools.

On the other hand, with the development of industrial robots, the introduction of industrial robots into the field of machining, through the perfect combination of robots and CNC machine tools, it is not only possible but also realistic to realize automation and informatization of machining.
